Pin Code
Search for your area PIN code by selecting the State, District and Office Name. You can also look for the locality of a PIN code too.
In India, we have something called a PIN code, which stands for Postal Index Number. This is a six-digit number used by the post office to sort and deliver mail. Think of it as a special address code to help post office workers send mail to the right place. The system was started in 1972 thanks to Sriram Vikaji Velankar, a top official in the Department of Communications. This was created because sometimes place names sound the same, addresses can be misspelt, or they are in different languages, which can be confusing.
A PIN code consists of six digits. Here's what they mean:
Union Territory / State-wise PIN Codes | |||
---|---|---|---|
Andaman & Nicobar Islands | Andhra Pradesh | Arunachal Pradesh | Assam |
Bihar | Chandigarh | Chhattisgarh | Dadra & Nagar Haveli |
Daman & Diu | Delhi | Goa | Gujarat |

Karnataka | Kerala | Lakshadweep | Madhya Pradesh |
Maharashtra | Manipur | Meghalaya | Mizoram |
Nagaland | Orissa | Pondicherry | Punjab |
Rajasthan | Sikkim | Tamil Nadu | Telangana |
Tripura | Uttar Pradesh | Uttarakhand | West Bengal |
India is divided into 9 major postal areas or “zones”. Of these, eight are for different parts of the country and one special zone is for the Indian Army only. The first number of your PIN code will tell you which region you are in.

In a zip code, the first three numbers together tell you about a particular area called the “sorting district”. It is like a large area of a state where the mail is organized. The main post office of the largest city in the area takes care of all the sorting. It’s like the boss of all post offices out there, and we call it the “Sorting Office.” Most states have at least one sorting district, but large states or places may have many mails. This rule is different only for special zones for the army.
